Bee-Love for the Environment

Art Medium: Creative Sign-making

Partner: Ya'axché Conservation Trust

 Location: Toledo, Belize

Artist: Kate Kerry and Christian Chacón

The Mayan Golden Landscape plays an important ecological role in the Mesoamerican Biological Corridor by connecting the coastal plains to the Maya Mountains. Ya'axche' works to inventory and protect bee population diversity in the area. In their summer camp this year, Ya'axche' engaged youth from neighboring agricultural communities in their efforts by integrating the Creative Action methodology. Participants learned about the conservation of native pollinators, the importance of forest conservation within farmlands, and how beekeeping can be an income-generating activity. At the end of the program, youth participants created educational signs to share with their communities and install in strategic locations to create awareness around bee conservation.

"I learned to protect bees and care for them instead of harming them. Creating and painting the signs was important because it allowed us to expresses our opinions so people can see them and spread the message.”
