The Challenge
In rural Kajiado, Kenya, adolescent girls face a web of barriers to staying in school, among them teenage pregnancy, drug abuse, lack of school fees, and long walking distances. Community interviews with 46 parents, women, and teachers identified teenage pregnancy as the primary driver of school dropout. A key factor the girls themselves uncovered was the role of bodaboda (motorcycle taxi) drivers, men with significant economic power in the community, who were systematically pursuing young girls romantically and financially, directly contributing to early pregnancy and the loss of educational opportunity. Girls were growing up without adequate parental guidance, reproductive health information, or community accountability structures to protect them.
The Action
• Community interviews conducted by 33 adolescent girls in the Sauti ya Dada cohort to map the root causes of school dropout, centering girls' own inquiry and analysis
• Design and distribution of educational posters on sexual and reproductive health and the consequences of early pregnancy, authored and placed by the girls themselves
• A public community event featuring dance performances with embedded advocacy messages about the importance of girls' education
• A direct, public call at the event for local police and government to hold bodaboda drivers accountable for exploitative behavior toward young girls
The Impact
• The Bodaboda Riders' Association chairman made a public commitment to train drivers on their responsibilities and to discipline any rider whose behavior contributes to school dropout
• Parents committed to greater involvement in their daughters' lives, acknowledging that responsibility for girls' wellbeing had been falling disproportionately on teachers
• The school responded by expanding guidance and counseling services for students
• 33 girls developed and led a full community advocacy campaign, from research through public action, shifting institutional practice and community norms in the process
