Raising Awareness About Sexual Abuse
Among Girls with Disabilities

Art Medium: Visual Arts
Partner: TRIUMPH  Uganda
Location: Jinja, Uganda
Artist: Irene Piloya

"We noticed that many girls with disabilities were getting pregnant, but no one was talking about sexual abuse. The rights of girls with disabilities are often ignored."
- Patience, Sauti ya Dada club member

(Content warning: The following video and explanation describe sexual assault).

Uplifting girls with disabilities is TRIUMPH Uganda's primary mission. During stay-at-home orders caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, gender-based violence, including sexual abuse, has dramatically increased, particularly for girls with disabilities. The girls from TRIUMPH worked with mentor Brenda Akankwasa and artist Irene Piloya to illustrate the circumstances in which sexual abuse can occur. They worked towards finding solutions to educate the community on the problem and advocate for girls with disabilities.
