Gender Discrimination and
Teen Pregnancy

Art Medium: Theater
Partner: Rafiki Wa Maendeleo Trust

Location: Rarieda Constituency, Kenya
Artist: Nerima Makhondo

"We spoke with other girls our age realized that many do not have strong mentorship. It should be everybody's responsibility to take care of a girl child to stop teen pregnancy."
- Karen, Sauti ya Dada club member

In Rarieda Constituency, Kenya,  the girls of Sauti ya Dada came together and determined that peer pressure, poverty, a lack of sexual and reproductive health information, and a disregard for the importance of girls’ education all contribute to unwanted pregnancies.

During a three-day clinic, artist Nerima Makhondo and mentor Pauline Ambrose coached the girls of Rafiki Wa Maendeleo Trust in theater exercises. At the end of the clinic, the girls presented their transformative theater skit to the community and communicated their solutions to the problem of teen pregnancy.
