Teen Pregnancy and Girls' Education
Art Medium: Theater
Partner: Girls Livelihood and Mentorship Initiative
Location: Arusha, Tanzania
Artist: Florence Mkinga

“When a girl becomes pregnant, her life changes. Her education ends, job prospects diminish, and she becomes more vulnerable to poverty.”
- Florence Mkinga, lead artist

To activate their leadership skills, the girls of the Sauti ya Dada club worked with local artist Florence Mkinga and mentor Chonge Tukwa to find solutions to prevent teen pregnancy. Together, they determined that empowering girls with sexual and reproductive health information and encouraging them to finish secondary school would reduce their chance of getting pregnant.

The girls created a skit and presented it to the community. Through this medium, they were able to speak directly to key stakeholders and work together to prevent teen pregnancy.
