Job Description

Creative Action Institute is looking for a dynamic Director of Development, to set strategy and execute its resource mobilization to secure one million dollars annually. With a strong foundation of long-term committed funding partners, the goal will be to expand our individual and major gifts, and corporate and foundation support to create a sustainable funding pipeline. This is a key position that will report directly to the Executive Director and collaborate closely with Executive Director, Development Committee, and Board of Directors to promote the organization’s mission and values and grow the base of donor support. This position will additionally have support from the Program and Operations Associate and Communications Associate to achieve fundraising goals.

Creative Action Institute operates its own annual programs; and it is also a consultant to mission-aligned organizations, developing highly innovative and cutting edge curriculum, toolkits, trainings and program models that support the development of transformational leadership, advocacy, education, climate justice and community resilience.

Responsibilities

Creative Action Institute is rapidly growing and seeks to bring in an experienced (7-10 years) and energic Director of Development to expand its resource mobilization efforts. The Director of Development will have the support of the Communications Associate (20%) and Program and Operations Associate (25%) and be expected to grow the development team as resources allow.  Responsibilities include:

 

Fundraising and Donor Stewardship

  • Lead fundraising strategy and infrastructure development including the creation of an annual fundraising plan designed to grow charitable giving and foster relationships with new individual, foundation, and corporate donors.

  • Steward relationships with existing and new donors by providing opportunities for engagement throughout the year, including a potential donor trip and/or site visit to witness the power of current programs, virtual programming, non-ask communications and meetings.

  • Identify and bring on new individual and major donors.

  • Lead fundraising events with support from the board Development Committee, the Communications Associate, and Program and Operations Assistant.

  • Steward existing foundation and corporate relationships, funder reports, and submitting proposals for renewed support.

  • Build a strong grant pipeline by conducting grant and corporate sponsorship research, developing proposals and building relationships with new foundation funders.

  • Provide quarterly fundraising updates to the board.

  • Expand the fundraising team as resources permit, and coach other key stakeholders in soliciting donations

  • Oversee the Program and Operations Assistant’s management of the donor database in SalesForce, issuance of tax receipts and thank you notes.

  • Provide leadership in developing strategy and compelling content for all donor communications (newsletters, appeal content, annual report, donor specific pages on the website) with support from the Communications Associate, and Program and Operations Assistant.

 

 

Education, Requirements, and Competencies

 

Education and Requirements

  • Candidates must be located in the US, with a preference near Boston.

  • Bachelor's degree

  • Minimum of 7 years of experience in fundraising, including leadership experience in individual giving, foundations, corporate, and development with an international non-profit organization.

  • Must have a strong understanding of international development and current issues, ideally in gender equality and climate justice.

  • Highly skilled in Microsoft Office Suite (especially Word, Excel and PowerPoint) and G Suite

  • Skilled in using SalesForce as a donor database

  • Non-profit finance experience preferred

  • Existing network of relationships with a relevant global community of donors, corporations, affiliate groups, media, etc. is strongly preferred.

  • English fluency is required (additional competency in Spanish and/or French is a bonus)

  • Location will be remote until COVID safe. Once safe, the role could either remain remote, or be based in our Ipswich, MA office. If remote, must be willing to travel to head office throughout the year as needed for meetings or events.

  • Must be able to travel internationally occasionally

Salary and Benefits

We offer a competitive salary between $85,000 - $100,000, commensurate with the candidate's experience.

Location

This position is currently remote. The selected candidate would have the option to work in the Ipswich, MA office once COVID-safe, or remain remote with periodic travel to Ipswich as needed.
