Creative Action Institute seeks a high-energy people person to support communication and resource development efforts by helping us 1) grow, cultivate, and nourish a thriving individual donor community and engage them through compelling appeals and 2) maintain and grow our corporate and foundation funding by identifying new funding opportunities that match our programs and developing proposals and funding reports. The role:

Reporting to the Director of Strategic Partnerships (DSP), the Development and Communications Specialist will grow our donor community through unique convenings and inspiring donor-centric communications and expand our corporate and foundation funding through funder research and supporting proposal development and reporting. This work is critical to Creative Action Institute maintaining a diversified income stream and complements our major gifts and direct payment funding. 


Development (40%)

Institutional Giving (10%)

  • Track grant reporting needs, coordinate content (stories, evaluation information, financial reporting) from other staff needed for reporting in a timely way, and develop and submit grant reports, with supervision from DSP.


Fundraising Events (15%)

  • Develop, plan, and manage engaging opportunities to cultivate and nourish donors to deepen their commitment to our work i.e., network building; securing sponsorships; securing event space, managing guest lists, ticket sales, etc.

  • Follow up with donors and attendees after the event.


Fundraising Administration (15%)

  • Collaborate with the DSP to develop strategies for fundraising through individual donors and events and provide input for institutional giving strategies

  • Salesforce data entry and reporting and donor tracking

  • Ensure clean data and database integrity and accurate tracking in Salesforce


Communications (60%)

Donor Communications, Cultivation, and Campaigns (35%)

Under the guidance of the Director of Strategic Partnerships, the Development and Communications Associate will:

  • Create and execute robust multi-channel appeals with concept development, copy editing, donor lists, mailings, emails, social media, phone calls, personalized communications, support and collaborate on graphic design as needed, etc.

  • Create and execute inspiring online campaigns (Facebook, etc.) 

  • Create and update content of giving pages on our website as needed.

  • Create and schedule fundraising and public relations content for emails, Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

  • Manage portfolio of individual donors through direct communication/meeting, increasing giving when appropriate and growing the base by adding new donors.

  • Design and implement small scale, personalized donor cultivation events.

  • Support and collaborate in the design of annual reports, marketing collateral and other donor communications, support in mailing donor communications.

  • Coordinate compilation and sending of monthly newsletter.


Design, Editing and Branding (25%)

  • Ensure all areas of the website are regularly updated and include new content as needed.

  • Support program team by developing content such as slide decks, videos, podcast cover graphics and other visual content to support programs, courses, trainings, summits, and curriculum development.

  • Ensure brand is consistent across all staff- includes developing and providing document templates, ensuring everyone has the brand fonts. May also include updating fonts and colors in collaboration with team members 

  • Copyediting and reviewing course material as needed for brand style consistency 

  • Liaise with field teams to gather impact stories that can be shared through communication channels    


Skills + Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalence in experience

  • At least 3-5 years of non-profit fundraising experience

  • Knowledgeable about current fundraising best practices

  • Knowledgeable about current communications best practices

  • Excellent writer 

  • Excellent verbal communicator; comfortable speaking to donors, board members, etc.

  • Strong capacity to problem-solve independently

  • Strong organization, communication, and interpersonal skills

  • Ability to manage multiple tasks at once

  • Ability to work in a small, dynamic, and highly collaborative team

  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

  • Experience with website management

  • Experience managing mailing lists and creating emails via email marketing platforms such as MailChimp

  • Graphic design and layout experience, preferably with Adobe products and Canva

  • Video editing experience 

  • Facility with major social media platforms i.e., Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc.

  • Comfort learning new software

  • Ability to manage up and incorporate feedback

  • Flexibility and sense of humor

  • Ability to travel occasionally


Preferred, but not required

  • Capacity to use: Google Suite, Salesforce, Asana, Wix, Canva, Mailchimp, and Classy

  • Experience working for a non-profit that works internationally

  • Bilingual - English/Spanish

Resident of the Boston area (office is in Ipswich, MA) preferred. Flex time and remote working arrangements possible.
