The Challenge

Deforestation caused by expanding agriculture has put the water supply at risk for the community of San Antonio Yaró. Forests that once served as water recharge zones (trapping rainwater to replenish underground water sources) are disappearing, leading to water shortages. Raising awareness about this issue is essential for reforestation efforts and protecting the community’s future water supply.

The Action

Creative Action Institute, in partnership with El Porvenir, worked with local residents and students to highlight the vital link between forest conservation and water security. As part of the initiative, participants designed and installed a mural to reinforce the role of forests in sustaining water quality. The project also included hands-on conservation efforts: residents of 105 homes, members of the community’s Drinking Water and Sanitation Committee, the local school board, teachers, and students took part in workshops on forest conservation and reforestation. They then put their knowledge into action by planting trees at the community’s water source to improve long-term water sustainability, participating in a clean-up campaign, and visiting a water recharge zone to deepen their understanding of how deforestation impacts access to clean water. To ensure lasting impact, the local school pledged to continue organizing community clean-up days and integrating environmental education into its curriculum, encouraging students to take an active role in protecting natural resources.

The Impact

• Still in progress. Stay tuned!

"These projects are fundamental for our community because they help change people's mindsets. They make us reflect on our surroundings and nature, reminding us of the beauty of our rivers and forests."
