The Challenge
In Luwero, Uganda, girls from the Sauti ya Dada (SYD) Club interviewed 45 community members to identify long distances and poor road conditions as major barriers to attending school. For girls, long distances to school are especially dangerous as it puts them at risk of suffering gender-based violence during their commute. Additionally, during heavy rains many roads become impassable, preventing them from reaching school altogether.
The Action
In response, the SYD girls created a mural that showed how distance and weather conditions affect girls’ access to education. They showcased the mural during a community event attended by over 50 people, including parents and local government officials. During the event, the girls advocated for road improvements and construction of a local school. Their efforts paid off—the sub-county chief pledged to push for new school construction, and local leaders successfully advocated for road upgrades, improving access to education for girls in the region.
